As smartphones and tablets supplement or replace personal computers as the favored means of browsing the Internet, users are exposed to not only the same undesirable content prevalent on other platforms, but also newly created mobile-specific threats.
GlobalView URL Filtering for Mobile enables real-time protection for mobile device users browsing the Web.
”Mobile devices are becoming more powerful and are being used more extensively for Internet browsing,” said Avi Turiel, Director of Product Marketing at Commtouch.
“Therefore, their frequent entrance into more secure enterprise and personal networks creates significant vulnerabilities. As this is the very first URL filtering SDK (Software Development Kit) available for the Android platform – and other platforms supporting the Java Virtual Machine – it addresses this problem head on.”
Designed to improved web security at the handset level without affecting the user’s browsing experience, the Commtouch SDK requires minimal resources. An adjustable local cache categorizes the vast majority of visited URLs on the device.
Commtouch feels its new offering is a good match for the tight memory requirements of portable devices, which rely on endpoint-based protection.
“The SDK is well suited to the memory constraints of mobile devices, and users are not expected to feel any reduction in performance or experience any browser lag,” Mr Turiel said.
“End customers will have access to applications developed by Commtouch partners that provide a high standard of URL filtering. These applications could include parental control, web security, or enterprise compliance. Managers benefit from more secured networks while the employees can surf with the knowledge that they are not jeopardizing the security of their employer’s or home networks.”
